Trading Thursday: Set Prices
So far, on Top Shot, there are 33 available sets to complete. Today, we'll be looking at the five most affordable sets to complete for Season 2 and some of my favorite Moments from each.
Sets aren't cheap to complete. They're more for bragging rights to show that you've collected each Moment required and conquered that specific set.
Some sets, though, are cheaper than you’d think to complete, and some come with some pretty flashy Moments that you can add to your collection.
Below are the most affordable Season 2 sets to finish, and as a bonus, I’ll highlight some of the biggest bargains in each set. All set prices are per MomentRanks at this time.
The Gift Set: $513
Out of all the Season 2 Sets - The Gift set has the least amount of Moments to complete it, so it makes sense it's the cheapest coming in at $513.
To finish the Set, you must collect a CJ McCollum, D’Angelo Russell, Derrick Rose, Donovan Mitchell, Jimmy Butler, and Rui Hachimura Moment. The most expensive out of the bunch is the Derrick Rose reward Moment which comes in at a floor price of $185 with only 3,484 minted, compared to the other five Moments minted at 8,888 each.
My favorite Moment out of the bunch is easily Donovan Mitchell’s wicked assist to Bojan Bogdanović. The Utah Jazz are one of the cinderella stories of this season, still holding onto first place in the loaded Western Conference, led by Donovan Mitchell. Even though Mitchell is hurt currently, the Jazz are still holding that first place down, shooting a ridiculous 41% from three as a team. This Moment is one of Mitchell’s most memorable plays from this season as he whips a pass only a handful of players can make in the NBA, drawing in the defense, leaving Bogdanović wide open where he cans the three-ball. It’s only listing with a floor price of $75.
The only other Moment that can compete with this Moment in this set is Derrick Rose’s New York Knicks Moment, simply for the fact it's his first Moment in a Knicks uniform. Rose is also one of the most beloved players in the NBA.
Seeing Stars Set: $2,877
Now, this is where the sets start to get a little pricier. The remaining sets to complete will all be four digits.
The Seeing Stars set consists of 27 Moments handpicked to celebrate the best players in the business, as Top Shot puts it. Some of these Moments, though, are pretty sub-par. Considering there are tons of plays that Top Shot could’ve chosen for each star, most are underwhelming and average plays that most of them can perform nightly.
Easily my favorite Moment for the price tag is Mike Conleys Seeing Stars reward Moment. This is the first Moment in Top Shot history where the player speaks and breaks down the play, and Conley explains what he was thinking as it was happening. Pretty cool if you ask me, and for $120, why not own a piece of Top Shot history?
Another Moment I love from this set is Jayson Tatum’s assist where he’s on his backside scrambling on the floor to find an open teammate. Eventually, Tatum hits Jaylen Brown, and Brown throws down the emphatic slam before Michael Porter Jr. can contest it. For $50 and one of the league's brightest, young, rising stars, if you're a Boston Celtics fan or just a fan of Tatum in general, it's an appealing Moment to add to your collection.
Cool Cats Set: $4,560
Currently, this is the only set still ongoing, and as of now, the Cool Cats 5 challenge just concluded. If you were to complete that challenge, you would receive a Fred VanVleet Moment where he throws up a desperation three that banks in.
The cost of this set is not including the VanVleet Moment. For collectors who completed this challenge: the VanVleet Moment will be hitting collectors accounts soon, but as of now, none are on the marketplace. As stated before in previous articles, if you collect every Cool Cat Moment, you’ll receive a LaMelo Ball master reward Moment, which is almost a guarantee to cost four digits minimum.
The Cool Cats set, as I’m writing this, has 26 Moments. But now, a Zach Lavine reward Moment is in the process of being minted, so more are on the way. Another thing to note with this set is more than half the price to complete this set is from one individual Moment, the first Cool Cats reward Moment, Luka Dončić. The Dončić Moment is listing at a floor of $2,500.
My favorite Moment from this set is from the Cool Cats 4 challenge, which resulted in collectors getting a Russell Westbrook reward Moment where Westbrook sinks the game-winning three. It was a sensational comeback from the Washington Wizards against the top-seeded Nets in the Eastern Conference. It’s the second-highest listing Cool Cats Moment behind Dončić, but it’s only listing for $188. For it being a Moment in one of the best games of this season, where Westbrook drops 41 points, ten rebounds, and eight assists; if you’re a Westbrook fan, go and get it.
A close second is who Westbrook was traded for, John Wall. In Wall’s Moment, he’s playing his former team and pulls off a vintage Wall move. In transition - Wall pulls off an incredible behind-the-back layup - wrapping the ball fully around his body to cap off a contested layup. It's only listing for $40.
Rising Stars Set: $7,419
This set is one of the most awesome sets in Top Shot, in my opinion. All 20 players in this set are incredibly young, and some, in the future, might have incredible careers. But with that said, the best bargains in this set rely on you making a prediction of which players have the most promising careers ahead.
Two Moments and their prices really stick out to me, though, in this particular set.
Ja Morant only has five rare Moments on Top Shot so far, and the remaining four not in this set all sell for a minimum of four digits each. This Morant Rising Stars Moment is only going for $320, and Morant is one of the most electrifying players in the association. This pricing doesn’t make sense to me considering the other Moments and where they’re priced. In his Moment - Morant heaves an over-the-head three-pointer and drains it, although he was looking for the foul. Morant is must-watch tv, and anything Morant will sell for a premium price.
Another Moment I’ve highlighted in the past is the Oklahoma City Thunder’s prized rookie point guard, Théo Maledon. Maledon has gotten a ton of experience with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander missing a significant part of the season with multiple injuries - and this experience will only help for next year and future seasons. Maledon is only 19 and the only French point guard you can compare him to is Tony Parker. Yes, while that’s an extreme comparison, I can see Maledon establishing himself as OKC’s point guard of the future. For it to be the sixth cheapest Rising Stars Moment at $155 and a Moment with two rookie badges - that's absurd.
2021 All-Star Game Set: $7,615
And now, lastly, we have the first All-Star Game set in Top Shot’s history. 22 Moments are required to conquer this set, and some Moments have a chance to be historic. Some Moments are players’ first All-Star Games, and for others, this may be their last.
Zion Williamson is only 20 years of age and is already one of the faces of the NBA. He’s broken multiple records in only his second season and will definitely break many more to come over the rest of his career. Williamson was the fourth-youngest player in NBA history to start an NBA All-Star Game. The others? Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, and LeBron James. Safe to say, that’s a pretty good list to be on. This was Williamson’s first All-Star Game of many more to come in the future. This is a historic Moment in Williamson’s career, and the price is well worth the $429.
Another Moment I just can’t get over is Chris Pauls All-Star Moment. Paul is now emerging as a potential MVP candidate leading the Suns to their first playoff birth since 2010.
He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer, no doubt, with the fifth-most assists in NBA history and by the end of his career, is likely to finish third on that list.
It’s a pretty amazing Moment in itself, as well. Steph Curry hits the cutting Paul for a rare dunk, and you can see CP3 smiling on his way back from the lob. The floor price for Paul’s Moment is at $229, listing as the eighth most expensive of all the All-Star Game Moments.
These two Moments, in particular, are the ones that jump out to me that will sustain their value long-term.
All views are my own.
